(Festival of Kobodaishi's birthday)

This festival is a cerebration of the birth of Kukai (Kobo Daishi). On the 15th day of June every year, a Buddhist memorial service is performed in the morning, and in the afternoon a portable shrine, Hanamido, which is decorated with flowers and enshrines a newborn Buddha statue, leads the procession in singing the Daishi-ondo, and goes all the way up to the Daishi Kyokai building from in front of the Ichino-hashi bridge, which is the entrance to the front approach of Okuno-in.

This tournament has been held since 1996 in Koyasan, and is operated as the Kinki Area Tournament through inviting boys baseball teams from around the Kinki district. In 1997, the tournament was held on a grand scale with 50 teams in the were Japan etc. In 1998, 50 teams including the previous year’s winner as well as the teams from the Kinki, Shikoku, Chugoku, Kyushu and Wakayama, participated in a 5 day competition for the pennant.

(Candle Festival)

This ceremony is generally called ‘Rousoku Matsuri’Candle Festival. On the 13th day of August, from 7 o’clock in the evening, people walk up to Torodo Temple in Okuno-in for the consolation of the departed souls of their ancestors. They place candles to illuminate both sides of the two kilometer approach, beginning at a place in front of the Ichino-hashi bridge, the entrance to the front approach of Okuno-in. The memorial service itself is held from 8 o’clock in the evening at Torodo Temple.

(Classic Car Event)

On the second Saturday and Sunday of November every year, world famous classic cars are gathered here in Koyasan. The classic car exhibition as well as driving demonstrations and other such events are held at the best time to view the autumn foliage.
